Damian Hurst or Jack Frost?

It's as Cold as Ice - BFFF Artist Jack Frost built a wall of ice to draw attention to the New Ice Age on London's Arty South Bank. Thousands of commuters were wowed with fresh fruit and vegetables in cryogenic-like suspended animation like a vegetarian version of Damian Hurst's horific pickled animals.

Once eveing fell it could be seen from nearly a mile away as the huge block of ice lit up the eerie arangement of fresh food.

Higher Protein Meals Could Help Burn Fat Faster Say Aussies

Could superfoods such as hulled hempseeds help with weightloss?

In Australia lead researcher Dr. Marijka Batterham, of the University of Wollongong in New South Wales has released details of their research that shows higher protein diets could help obese people lose weight.

Batterham says "Our research suggests that people with higher body fat burn fat better after a high-protein meal than people with lower levels of body fat"

The findings, based on 18 adults whose post-meal metabolism was tested on 3 separate days was published in the journal Nutrition & Dietetics. Their average age was 40 years, eight subjects were overweight, six subjects had a normal weight, and four were obese.

When participants ate a breakfast with one third of calories coming from protein and only a third from carbohydrates the researchers found it was shown that obese subjects could burn fat closer to the rate at which thinner subjects could.

Nutrition Weight Loss Diets

Foods for Life Nutritionist, London Yvonne Bishop-Weston says “This is no surprise, we use protein to balance metabolism, moderate blood sugar levels and create nutritional sustainability so that you feel fuller for longer. Typically people eat far too many simple carbohydrates and I think this research has a much to do with reducing the ratio of bread used in the control meals as it does with the increased protein. It’s good to see someone doing research into type of calories and metabolism rather than just out dated calorie restriction. This research also proves the basic nutritionist’s premise, everybody is different and need to be treated as individuals.”

The Healing Path :: CODEX AILIMENTARIUS- 2009 NEW WORLD ORDER/ BILL C-51: Dr. Rima Laibow, MD, in a passionate speech at the 2005 conference of the National Association of Nutrition Professionals (NANP)calls the new Codex standards “food regulations that are in fact the legalization of mandated toxicity and under-nutrition.”

"Ever heard of the Codex Alimentarius? It’s one of the best-kept “open secrets” of the U.S. government. It’s scheduled to take effect on December 21, 2009, and it may present the greatest disaster for our food supply—and thus for our health— the world has ever seen."

It seems the Pharmaceutical and oil industries will finally get their way to keep us all in line and dependent on their wares. Unless we act now it appears that we will loose the right to preventative medicines, vitamins, herbs, and minerals will be banned at any therapeutic dose allowable only at a dose of 100th of their "safe" levels. We will lose the right to choose non GM foods. We will loose the right to use newly polarised 'ancient foods' and herbal medicines will be banned by changing them from a food category to a drug category - many herbal remedies used successfully for thousands of years may be lost.

Junk Food Pizza Challenge Tossed Up By London Nutritionist Foods For Life - EWORLDWIRE

Pizza Hut have announced it is changing its name to Pasta Hut. Nutrient-stripped white carbohydrates are the last thing we need. Research suggests we eat too much saturated animal fat and not enough essential fats, too much junk starch and sugar and not enough whole grains, too much meat and dairy and not enough fibre-rich, mineral-rich plant-based proteins. All these imbalances have led to a modern plague of preventable chronic diseases

Is Animal Testing Valid?

Hypocrisy on animal tests - Scotsman.com

Scotsman - Published Date: 07 November 2008
Dr Simon Festing (Letters, 5 November) accuses David Martin, MEP, of regurgitating misleading propaganda, while doing precisely that himself.

Dr Festing claims that experiments on monkeys have led to treatments for conditions such as stroke and Parkinson's disease, but this is not true. In fact, scientists acknowledge that one of the main reasons for our lack of effective stroke treatments is that tests in animals, particularly monkeys, have been so misleading.

Everything we know about Parkinson's disease has been learned from human patients, not monkeys. It is by studying humans and their tissues that we will find the answers to these terrible diseases.

Mr Martin calls for modern, effective research, but Dr Festing, who is paid to defend animal research, hypocritically accuses him of blocking progress.

Vegans Answers for Optimum Nutrition?

World Vegan DayVegans May Have Answers to Optimum Nutrition Says Leading Nutritionist, Yvonne Bishop-Weston

Metabolic Inflamation Thwarts Weight Loss

The nutritionist says "researchers from the University of Wisconsin-Madison recently revealed in the journal 'Cell' that a diet with too many nutritionally empty calories can lead to metabolic inflammation."

Metabolic inflammation is a chronic, low-grade condition consisting of inflammatory-like responses at the molecular level. It’s thought it has many consequences including causing cellular dysfunction, which can decrease the regulation of several physiological processes, including metabolism. Metabolic inflammation may also be at the core of many chronic, obesity-related metabolic disorders that are so common today.

"In these days of food shortages, nutrient deficiencies, water shortages, energy shortages, environmental devastation, overpopulation and an epidemic of preventable chronic disease it’s even more vitally important that we choose our calories carefully than when Donald Watson first raised these issues 64 years ago when he founded veganism" says Bishop-Weston.

Bishop-Weston goes on to urge us to reduce the amount of calories we in the west soak up from eating nutrient stripped ‘white carbohydrates’ from foods such as white pasta, white bread, processed white rice, cakes biscuits and sugar. She says these are the most likely calories stored as body fat. As the body stores toxins in fat you need to be quite clever to coax your body to break that fat down again.

20 'functional foods' for a long life

Revealed: The 20 functional foods you should be eating for a long and active life | Mail Online

20 types of food and drink have been identified by Gary Williamson, professor of 'functional foods' at Leeds University, and he recommends that we should all make them part of our diets.

20 foods

He claims the 20 superfoods are: Apples, blackberries, black tea, blueberries, broccoli, cereal bran, cherries, cherry tomatoes, coffee, cranberries, dark chocolate, green tea, oranges, peaches, plums, raspberries, red grapes, red onions, spinach, strawberries.

London Nutritionist Yvonne Bishop-Weston says "Most of the things on this list will enhance your life. From our work on fertility in our clinics we find that the caffienne in Black tea and especially in coffee probably outweighs any net health benefit, green tea perhaps just about gets away with it but I think you are better off without coffee. Cereal bran is a bit too ambiguous to be on the list - it would have been better to call the category whole grains lest people fill up on Allbran or wheat bran and think they are protecting their health.

Notably missing from this list are foods rich in essential omega 3 fats such as hemp seeds, flax seeds, rape seeds and their cold pressed virgin oils that are needed to protect the integrity of every cell in your body."

Vitamin D a key player in overall health of several body organs, says UC Riverside biochemist

vitamin D vital for Health Vitamin D a key player in overall health of several body organs, says UC Riverside biochemist

In a paper published in the August issue of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, Norman identifies vitamin D's potential for contributions to good health in the adaptive and innate immune systems, the secretion and regulation of insulin by the pancreas, the heart and blood pressure regulation, muscle strength and brain activity. In addition, access to adequate amounts of vitamin D is believed to be beneficial towards reducing the risk of cancer.

Norman also lists 36 organ tissues in the body whose cells respond biologically to vitamin D. The list includes bone marrow, breast, colon, intestine, kidney, lung, prostate, retina, skin, stomach and the uterus.

According to Norman, deficiency of vitamin D can impact all 36 organs. Already, vitamin D deficiency is associated with muscle strength decrease, high risk for falls, and increased risk for colorectal, prostate and breast and other major cancers.

"It is becoming increasingly clear to researchers in the field that vitamin D is strongly linked to several diseases," said Norman, a distinguished professor emeritus of biochemistry and of biomedical sciences who has worked on vitamin D for more than 45 years. "Its biological sphere of influence is much broader than we originally thought. The nutritional guidelines for vitamin D intake must be carefully reevaluated to determine the adequate intake, balancing sunlight exposure with dietary intake, to achieve good health by involving all 36 target organs."

Vitamin D is synthesized in the body in a series of steps. First, sunlight's ultraviolet rays act on a precursor compound in skin. When skin is exposed to sunlight, a sterol present in dermal tissue is converted to vitamin D, which, in turn, is metabolized in the liver and kidneys to form a hormone. It was Norman's laboratory that discovered, in 1967, that vitamin D is converted into a steroid hormone by the body.

Breast is Best

Bloomberg.com: Asia: "The Geneva-based World Health Organisation (WHO) says exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of a child's life is the single best strategy for the infant's survival, growth and development."

The recent scandal in China where melamine was discovered in infant formula exposed an increased reliance on formula by mothers in asia.

In the Philippines, where $465 million of formula is bought each year, one in six babies depended on breast milk at 5 months of age in 2003, a decrease from one in five infants in 1998, the WHO said. ``Inappropriate feeding practices, including the use of infant formula,'' is linked to the deaths of about 16,000 children younger than 5 annually, the agency said

'Brainy Bread' Saves Environment

omega 3 essential fats from Algae in EPA DHA rich vegetarian vegan bread, pasta, cheese, milk, yoghurt
Response Source | Press Releases - Brainy Bread Now Affordable With Omega 3 Algae Oil Food Ingredient - Could Save Environment

Omega 3 Brainy Bread, Pasta, cheese and yoghurts could save the planet!

The company that gave us V-Pure, the world's first fish free vegetarian and vegan Docosahexaenoic acid - (DHA) and Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) product has recently bought the rights to a new product that could make products such as 'Brainy Bread' and 'Brainy Pasta' a viable and affordable possibility.

Eau Plus now have a range of Algal Oils and products and have dramatically increased their production capabilities through acquistion of a new European fermentation facility. Other algal oils on the market just contain DHA but V-Pure has both DHA and EPA making it the perfect product to use to manufacture vegan and vegetarian superfoods that will sustainably address the essential fat famine in modern diets.

"This nutrient rich algae food ingredient could transform the food manufacturing industry and at last re-address the balance between easily available foods that contribute to health and foods that leave us with a net nutrient deficit" says London Nutritionist Yvonne Bishop-Weston.

Eau + also have a new groundbreaking dairy free calcium drink.

Vitamin B12 Protects Brain

Minyanville - Market Commentary, Investing Ideas, Global Finance, The Economy: "Anna Vogiatzoglou, a member of the Department of Physiology, Anatomy and Genetics at Oxford, in a prepared statement on brain shrinkage said that “Research shows that Vitamin B-12 deficiency is a public health problem, especially among the elderly, so more Vitamin B-12 intake could help reverse this problem.”

Vitamin B-12 deficiency can also cause anemia and troubles with the nervous system, researchers found.

Researchers at Oxford University established the link between diet and brain size by conducting memory tests, physical exams and brain scans on 107 people aged 61 to 87. The volunteers were retested five years after the initial exam and researchers found those with the lowest levels of Vitamin B-12 were more likely to have suffered brain shrinkage. The tests support earlier research that established a link between brain atrophy and low levels of Vitamin B-12.

Alcohol also hammers the brain. Researchers found that brain scans of more than 1,800 people who had 14 or more drinks a week sustained 1.6% more brain shrinkage than those who didn’t drink at all. Beer does less damage than wine.

Aging hippies who say marijuana is harmless are mistaken. Researchers found that cannabis has the same brain-damaging effect as alcohol"

DHA and Breastfeeding Boost Baby Brains

Breast feeding and omega 3 DHA and EPA best for Baby brain
Eating Fish While Pregnant, Longer Breastfeeding, Lead To Better Infant Development, Research Finds

Here's another study , this time from Denmark, backing up the findings that omega 3 long chain fatty acids DHA and EPA and human milk rather than cow's milk derivatives can optimise a baby's cognitive brain development.

The study, which appeared in the September issue of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, was conducted by researchers from the Department of Ambulatory Care and Prevention of Harvard Medical School and Harvard Pilgrim Health Care and the Maternal Nutrition Group from the Department of Epidemiology at Statens Serum Institut in Copenhagen, Denmark. These findings provide further evidence that omega-3 fatty acids and compounds in breast milk are beneficial to infant development.

The children whose mothers ate the most fish during pregnancy were more likely to have better motor and cognitive skills. For example, among mothers who ate the least fish, 5.7% of their children had the lowest developmental scores at 18 months, compared with only 3.7% of children whose mothers had the highest fish intake. Compared with women who ate the least fish, women with the highest fish intake (about 60 grams - 2 ounces - per day on average) had children 25% more likely to have higher developmental scores at 6 months and almost 30% more likely to have higher scores at 18 months.

Longer duration of breastfeeding was also associated with better infant development, especially at 18 months. Breastmilk also contains omega-3 fatty acids. The benefit of fish consumption was similar among infants breastfed for shorter or longer durations.

Powdered milk made from cow's milk is a poor substitute for human milk and health professionals should stop encouraging the use of powdered milks to the detriment of mothers confidence to breast feed.

Sustainable alternatives to fish oil made from algae are now available. Until the age of 5 infants seem to most benefit from DHA but so far the algae alternatives are all DHA rich.

See omega 3 long chain fatty acids DHA and EPA for more details and the importance of DHA and EPA omega 3 fats

Vegan Diet Reduces Risk of Arthritis, Heart Attack and Stroke

Karolinska Institute in Stockholm Vegan Diet Reduces Risk of Arthritis, Heart Attack and Stroke

Researchers from the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden, published a study in the journal Arthritis Research and Therapy showing that eating a vegan, gluten-free diet may reduce the risk of heart attacks and strokes in rheumatoid arthritis patients, as well as reducing the severity of the disease.

Rheumatoid arthritis is considered a significant risk factor for cardiovascular disease.

The researchers studied 66 adults with rheumatoid arthritis, averaging 50 years in age. Thirty-eight of the adults were placed on a vegan, gluten-free diet in which carbohydrates provided 60 percent of daily calories, fat provided 30 percent and protein provided 10 percent.

A vegan diet is one free of any animal products, including flesh, dairy and eggs. In addition to omitting animal products, the study participants also eschewed gluten, a protein found in wheat, barley, oats and rye.

Instead, participants in the vegan, gluten-free group began with a one-day, low-energy diet of berry juice and broth. Starting on the second day, they were fed grains such as buckwheat, corn, millet and rice, as well as ample quantities of nuts, sunflower seeds, vegetables and fruits. Calcium was provided with a daily serving of sesame milk.

The 28 participants in the control group were fed a diet including both animal products and gluten with a similar carbohydrate-fat-protein breakdown to the vegan diet. They were encouraged to eat five or more servings of fruits and vegetables per day and to eat complex carbohydrates, such as whole grains and potatoes, over simpler sources.

In both diets, saturated fat was kept to a maximum of 10 percent of daily energy intake.

After three and 12 months, the researchers measured several biomarkers in all the participants. Only 58 percent of the people in the vegan, gluten-free group completed the study.

The researchers found that participants in the vegan group experienced a drop in their body mass index, total cholesterol and LDL ("bad") cholesterol. Triglyceride and HDL ("good") cholesterol levels did not change. There was also an increase in the levels of antiPC antibodies, which are believed to help protect the body against cardiovascular disease.

None of these markers changed in the control group.

A Steady Diet of Medals and Fast Food - 2008 Olympics

Michael Phelps 12,000 calorie fast food diet dangerous long term

A Steady Diet of Medals and Fast Food - 2008 Olympics – Sports and News from China – The New York Times - Michael Phelps High Calorie fast food Diet

The papers recently are full of stories of olympic swimmers living off a diet of fast food but Ryan Lochte and multi gold medalist Michael Phelps are both only 23. The worry is the effects on their bodies in later life.

Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte's high calorie fast food diets are similar to american footballers high in saturated animal fat dripping with cholesterol there's no doubt you need those extra calories andprotein to feed those muscles that burn calories faster than fat and also to fuel all that extra energy expenditure but it could be plant based instead.

Former champion weightlifter now Foods for life Sports nutritionist Gareth Zeal used to lift more than weight lifters twice his size. The beauty about plant based protein and plant based fats is that they can provide real power without the bulk and without the detrimental ramifications on long term health.

Many American footballer find themselves crippled in later life and their average life expectancy can be 20 years lower than the American average.

But what young man wouldn't want a body like Michael Phelps??

London nutritionist Yvonne Bishop-Weston says "So many kids will be influenced by this very talented and driven gold medalist and no doubt there will be many that use this extreme case to try to justify high fat fast food is good for you. If only they could see 20 years into the future they might think again. The English Ruby team have been using organic conconut fat to achieve power and energy with great success. Our nutritionist Gareth is living proof you can have pure power on plant based protein and essential fats and grow old gracefully without aches and pains and the after effects of mutating your body. I sincerely hope it inspires many more kids to get excited about exercise and swimming rather than burgers and cheese"

Home - Homeopathy worked for me

Home - Homeopathy worked for me

As well as a concerted effort by industrial and commercial interests to discredit nutrition therapy and ban vitamins and minerals there is now also a mounting campaign to ban homeopathy too.

If you have ever been successfully helped by homeopathy or know someone close to you who has please sign this declaration >> Homeopathy

Homeopathy to me is like TV would be to a neanderthal - I don't know how it works but it does - I had a skin condition for over 10 years that cleared within 2 weeks of visiting a homeopath. I've seen amazing results on children who are uncontaminated by modern medicine, heard many first hand anecdotal tales and I am as 'sold' as the many farmers who use homeopathy to cure their animals ills (you can't even use the placebo excuse on that one)

The worst they can argue is that it doesn't work - they can hardly argue it's dangerous if they don't believe there is enough of an active ingredient in homeopathic medicine to provoke an immune response.

We would have a problem on our hands if the government believed in homeopathy. Think of the consequences for London. London water is in homeopathic terms a homeopathic toxic poison, a cocktail of drugs, hormones (from the contraceptive pill), and various diseases.

Perhaps the ramifications are just too frightening to allow them to accept it??

Preserving Muscle Mass

Plant Foods for Preserving Muscle Mass - News from the USDA Agricultural Research Service

This study had escaped our eye until now - just catching up -

The study was led by physician and nutrition specialist Bess Dawson-Hughes at the Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts University in Boston, Mass.

The typical American diet is rich in protein, cereal grains and other acid-producing foods. In general, such diets generate tiny amounts of acid each day. With aging, a mild but slowly increasing metabolic "acidosis" develops, according to the researchers.

Acidosis appears to trigger a muscle-wasting response. So the researchers looked at links between measures of lean body mass and diets relatively high in potassium-rich, alkaline-residue producing fruits and vegetables. Such diets could help neutralize acidosis. Foods can be considered alkaline or acidic based on the residues they produce in the body, rather than whether they are alkaline or acidic themselves. For example, acidic grapefruits are metabolized to alkaline residues.

Fruit juice causes type 2 diabetes?

fruit juice causes risk of type 2 diabetes study Nutritionists prove link between
fruit juice and type 2 diabetes

Dr Lydia Bazzano and colleagues from Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine in Louisiana and other medical and academic centres across the USA carried out this study. The research was supported by the National Institutes of Health. One of the researchers received a grant from the Office of Research on Women’s Health and Office of Dietary Supplements. It was published in the peer-reviewed medical journal: Diabetes Care.

This was a cohort study of over 70,000 female nurses followed for 18 years to determine the links between diet and risk of various outcomes. The study has published many parts of its results over time, and in this particular paper the researchers report on the association between all fruit and vegetables, particular types of fruit or vegetable, and fruit juice with the onset of type 2 diabetes during the 18 years of follow-up.

This confirms advice by qualified nutritionists, good dietitians and the Food Standards agency that warn it's whole fruit and vegetables you need for optimum health not fruit juice.

No matter how much juice you drink it only counts as 1 portion towards your 5 (better 8 or 9) portions of fruit and veg per day.

Juice is quite often not juice at all and this study doesn't seem to differentiate. Many juices on the market are 'fruit drinks' with added sugar or worse still added sweeteners. Juice is very rarely fresh more likely pasteurised that would kill the beneficial enzymes that you would get from live fresh fruit. Even smoothies are pasteurised so although you benefit from the fibre and are thus better than juice or no fruit at all they are still not as good as a home made berry smoothie or the fresh fruit itself.

Intake of total fruit and green leafy vegetables appeared to reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes which confirms nutritionist and Raw Foodists claims that green is the most important colour in your rainbow menu.

Advice?

Same old same old - 3 portions of fresh fruit and 5 portions of vegetables per day with a rainbow of colours - emphasis on the green. Fresher and the least processed (raw?) the better.

Fresh smoothies are getting easier to buy with smoothie bars opening up in shopping malls - they usually use frozen berries which some would argue is better than limp fresh ones. For convenience you could add a heaped teaspoon of green hemp protein or seaweed and algae to your fruit smoothie to lessen the strain of the sugar on your insulin levels or eat a handful of seeds with your smoothie.

The one juice exception may be wheat grass but I suspect we'll have to wait quite some time before we see a research study of 121,700 nurses on their wheat grass juice consumption and the effects on insulin levels over 18 years even in the USA

Nutritionists and Dietitians

catherine collins If anyone had any doubt about the differences between Nutritionists and Dietitians Catherine Collins put them straight on Radio 4 recently - 'if your urine is too dark or you are thirsty then drink squash and coffee' she told the Radio 4 listeners

She insinuated her clinics are full of people maimed by incompetent Nutritionists. In our nutritional therapy clinics we regularly see people who feel they have to pay £95 an hour because they have been failed by their NHS GPs and dietitians, left to suffer for up to 20 years with missed obvious clues to their underlying symptom causing conditions.

I guess that's another difference with dietitian Catherine Collins and a good nutritionist , instead of hyperbolic whinging on the radio that all Doctors and dietitians should get some basic nutrition training or be thrown in jail, qualified Nutritional therapists get on with the job of healing people.

The final difference between Nutritionists and dietitians is the most important one. Patients rarely get 'sent' to a nutritionist, they don't have to come, sent by their doctor. Patients choose to come, choose their therapist, choose to pay and choose to follow a nutritionist's advice. Patients usually arrive at our clinics after a personal recommendation from someone who's life we have already transformed.

Yes it is a constant thorn in our side too, that there are some truly awful practitioners out there that call themselves nutritionists. Surprisingly we can't get wait to get regulated (as long as the EU leave us the tools to do the job). However although regulation will weed out some of the Personal Trainers that call themselves nutritionists and a host of other 'Jack of all trade' alternative therapists it won't solve the kind of problems that provoke Collin's vitriolic attacks. GP's are heavily regulated, it doesn't stop them missing things that experienced qualified nutritional therapists regard as blatantly obvious. You can't know everything - that's why you have specialists.

It's great that dietitians are finally regulated and now required to participate in regular professional development but old habits die hard and there are still the odd few that are able to do more harm than good. (Ice cream and custard creams for osteoporosis!!??!!) Frustated by the constraints of dietetics as a therapeutic tool some dietitians have gone on to learn about nutritional therapy and are now some of the most dynamic practitioners out there.

A modicom of common sense maybe useful here. Choose a nutritional therapist who specialises in nutrition, with experience, with insurance, with recognised qualificatons and preferably with a personal recommendation.

Nutritional therapy is performance based. If therapists don't get people well, patients won't come back, they won't tell their friends and they won't pay the money. Chances are they won't be in business for very long.

Secret Ingredients in Takeaway Food

Of course most restaurants don't want you to know what's in their food. If you did you think twice about eating it. Pizzas, Kebabs and curries have been shown to have more than a whole days allowance of saturated fat. Chinese food can not just have over the odds on saturated fat but up to 19 teaspoons of sugar per dish.

Yvonne Bishop-Weston Nutritionist London on GM TV this morning says "People can't make healthier choices if the nutritional information is kept secret. The simplest idea is to extend the Food Standards Traffic light system - If people then have a dish with a red rating for saturated fat or sugar they then know they factor that in for other food they eat that day.

Leading takeaway chains still offer little if any nutritional information to help customers make healthy choices, a study has found. None of the major takeaway restaurants give nutritional details on menus or menu boards, despite Britons eating almost two billion of their meals a year, the National Consumer Council (NCC) said.

Customers find it difficult to work out how much fat, salt and sugar they are eating, and cannot compare meals to choose healthier options, the NCC said. The survey of seven restaurant chains named Pizza Express as the worst offender for offering no nutritional information at all in its stores or online. Wimpy, Pizza Hut and Domino's Pizza only offered information on their websites.

Only Burger King made details available before ordering in the form of a leaflet at the counter. KFC and McDonald's printed information on the back of tray liners. The NCC found that nutritional information was often hard to find, complex and difficult to understand. None of the information allowed consumers to compare the relative healthiness of different meal options at a glance.

A poll of customers by the NCC found three quarters would find nutritional information useful in takeaway restaurants, while 61% would use it to choose healthier meals. The study found a KFC meal of a Tower Burger, regular BBQ beans, yoghurt and cola contained nearly a whole day's salt and more than two thirds of the recommended daily amount of sugar.

In comparison, a KFC drumstick and breast, regular fries, Munch Bunch raspberry yoghurt and a regular diet cola provided less than half a day's salt and a sixth of the daily amount of sugar.

The Cabinet Office Food Matters study released this week recommended looking at ways to help consumers have access to healthier choices when eating out and having more information about the health and environmental impacts of their diet.

Recent studies have warned that single take-away meals such as curries or Chinese dishes can include more saturated fat than an adult should eat in an entire day. NCC policy expert Jeff Allder said: ``It's important that people can choose a healthy option if they want one, especially with consumers' growing appetite for fast food and the rise of obesity and diet-related illnesses.

``If people are going to change their eating habits they need clear, up-front information about what they are eating. The largest takeaway chains should take a lead from supermarkets, which provide a lot of information at a glance.''

Milk just like barium based drink

Cost-Effectiveness and Patient Tolerance of Low-Attenuation Oral Contrast Material: Milk Versus VoLumen -- Koo et al. 190 (5): 1307 -- American Journal of Roentgenology

For years, countless people have had to force down about 1,200 cc of a barium contrast drink before having CT scans of their abdomen and pelvis to diagnose bowel disorders and abnormalities. The barium coats the insides of the esophagus, stomach and intestine, appearing dark while the intestinal wall appears brighter. The contrast from the barium allows radiologists to better visualize the bowel wall and more clearly delineate the bowel cavity and soft tissue. Barium drinks, however, can come with unpleasant side effects like constipation, diarrhea, nausea and cramping. The acidy-burning taste of the chalky, milky liquid can make getting it down one of the most unpleasant parts of the diagnostic test.

Children especially balk at drinking the barium–based drinks.

Clever researchers at St Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital in New York City thought , "hmmmm - constipation, diarrhea, nausea and cramping?.....same syptoms many people have if they drink milk" They wondered if milk might work just as well.

And it does!

No statistically significant differences were seen between whole milk and VoLumen with respect to degree of bowel distention and mural visualization for all segments of bowel studied

Saf Restaurant

Is Saf restaurant the healthiest food in London ? It's certainly the most exquisite, the most refreshing, the most nutritionally self indulgent, the most life changing, the most eye opening, the most likely to gently disolve pre-concieved ideas about eating out and restaurant food in general.

Saf means pure in Turkish. It is the sort of food that has been spoken of for 60 years but rarely if ever before prepared with such skillful hands and heart. Pure fantasy made into pure reality.

Baby boy or girl - are what you eat?

research study shows calorie diet can make sex, baby boy or baby girl What are little boys made of? Scientists pinpoint bananas | Science | The Guardian

New research from Scientists at Oxford and Exeter universities suggests what you eat can assist in determining the sex of your baby, increases the chances of having a baby boy or baby girl.

Researchers asked 740 women, who had become pregnant for the first time, about their eating patterns in the year before they conceived. They then divided the women into high, medium and low calorie groups.

They found that 56% of women in the high calorie group gave birth to boys, compared with 45% in the lower calorie group.

Yvonne Bishop-Weston fertility expert from Foods for Life, Nutritionist London says "There are a number of things you can do to increase the odds in your favour of a baby boy or a baby girl including carefully choosing nutrients. However it's dangerous to start enccouraging women to consume more calories or restrict calories before conception. Low fat diets can lead to insufficient essental fats for the baby's brain and eye development or in extreme cases of calorie restriction lead to misscarriage. Many high calorie foods can hinder your ability to concieve. This research was carefully supervised but once the information is diluted into another urban myth it could equally lead to more infertility rather than more aspirational sons and daughters."

McDonalds Faces Fine in New New York Law

At Fast-Food Outlets: Premature Sticker Shock for the Weight Conscious - New York Times

Mcdonalds face fine for high calories foods in NYC

World's eyes are on McDonalds to see if they comply with new laws put in place by New York that enforces restaurants to display calorie information.

The New York State Restaurant Association, went to court last week to try to block the changes. It argued that the rule was an infringement of the First Amendment, which prevents government messages being forced onto businesses.

However, the judge found that the new rules served the public interest by providing customers with accurate nutritional information.

The Department of Health stated that a district court judge has set Friday, April 25th as the new date for the law to go into effect.

The date the grace period ends has also been pushed to June 6.

If McDonalds don't post calorie information by then there could be trouble.

Yvonne Bishop-Weston, Foods for Life nutritionist London says "Calories are just the tip of the fast food nutritional iceberg but it's a good start. How can people make informed responsible decisions on their health if the information is kept from them? When we shop for groceries the information on basic nutrients is all there but when we eat out we are often choosing in the dark"

Study on Supplements by Copenhagen University and Cochrane

Foods for Life 100% agree with The Danish University and The Cochrane group's basic premise that the most important factor is a healthy diet rich in fruit and vegetables and natural anti-oxidants. Foods for Life however don’t agree that the meta analysis proves supplements are ineffective as a preventative medicine.

supplements, vitamins and minerals can enhance the effects of a healthy diet but not replace it Unfortunately the Cochrane Collaboration doesn't make it easy to find out exactly under what grounds so many studies were excluded from its meta review, or exact amounts and quality for the supplements that were taken and in what context and who ultimately funded this meta analysis and why.

Most nutrients work in a complex synergy with each other and when you obtain them through food you obtain a range of other synergistic nutrients such as essential fats, supporting vitamins, minerals and other anti oxidants.

For instance wheat germ, red palm oil, corn, nuts, seeds, avocado, olives, spinach and other green leafy vegetables, Asparagus and Vegetable oils such as corn, sunflower, soybean, and cottonseed are all good sources of vitamin E but come free with many other nutrients.

Vitamin A and selenium are both nutrients that can potentially cause as much damage to health in excess as they can in deficiency.

Vitamin B12 (not part of this study)has been shown to be fatal to some people with a specific medical condition but generally, taken sublingually it can protect life from some conditions.

There is a risk that people taking supplements then excuse themselves of more crucial need to moderate their diet and eat sensibly using a wide variety of fresh foods to supply a broad base range of nutrients such as soluble fibre, essential amino acids and essential fats, and micro nutrients. It’s not logical to assume that any amount of vitamin E taken in isolation would be enough to counterbalance a diet full of saturated animal fat, sugar, salt, caffeine and alcohol which is sadly what so many people rely on in today's society

It's misleading to isolate vitamins and minerals, take them out of normal context and make judgements like this because without ensuring an individual has a nutritional need and the correct levels of supporting nutrients then it could lead to other deficiencies and subsequent problems. It would be very questionable, unusual and strange for a nutritional therapist to just advise taking vitamin E, Vitamin A, Vitamin C and selenium which is the basis for the Danish University review.

There are always risks with self prescription. A nutrition therapist has to study for a minimum of 3 years and then continually update their knowledge to be granted professional insurance that allows them to practice and advise individual clients on their individual nutritional health needs.

However it's irresponsible to suggest, as the National papers have today, that supplements are bad for you.

The Bitch Doctor

Nutritionist hit man?. Dr Ben Goldacre - is he GSK's Bitch Doctor?
The Bitch Doctor has won a number of awards for his services rendered - particularly GSK and syngenta

Struggling to achieve anything of any real life changing worth himself, the pseudo professional big pharma / agro chemical lobbyist Bitch Doctor has piggybacked the careers of successful TV nutritionists such as Patrick Holford and Gillian Mckieth to carve a moaning little career for himself as a hit man.

'Dr' Ben Goldacre has secured a slot on Radio 4 in a vain attempt further his quest for the same celebrity status as his targets.

Like the snakeoil salesmen the Bitch Doctor professes to uncover there is an element of truth in some of what he says - enough to get the the likes of Radio 4 to grant him airtime.

But unlike the targets of his huge chip on shoulder uncontrollable ravenous jealousy he offers few solutions for improved health and wellbeing. Whereas others travel the country trying to improve people's lives and educate them about things they can do for free to improve their health he just moans and whines like a little spoilt boy.

It's easy to imagine the Bitch Doctor whimpering to the mirror mirror on the wall "It's not fair that these people are so much more successful than me - I trained to be a proper doctor you know.... they are nasty, there's no evidence they are telling the truth"

Sorry Ben - there are millions of people out there with evidence - such as a recent Food for Life client who'd been suffering for 13 years with IBS and was cured within a few weeks with nutrition therapy.

Whilst Doctors stop people dying nutritionists can stop people suffering. Yes if you suspect you have a life threatening disease then call NHS direct and rush yourself to the nearest hospital. If the MRSA doesn't get you first you've a better than good chance they'll save your life.

If your Doctor says there's nothing much more he can do then call a nutritionist there's always a chance they can help especially with fertility, digestion,Irritable Bowel Syndrome / IBS, hormonal health, stress, skin problems, acne, asthma, eczema, weight management and a host of other conditions they may have told you you'll just have to put up with.

If the Pooh Doctor, The Diet Doctors, the Food Doctor or The Baby Doctor decide they can actually be bothered to sue the Bitch Doctor after all then we suspect his demise won't be mourned by many apart from the 'quackbusting' pharmaceutical industry

Interesting reading about Ben Goldacre here. Ben Goldacre

Stress causing pupils to commit suicide

stress in kids, stressed children Stress causing pupils to commit suicide, says union | News crumb | EducationGuardian.co.uk: "Phil Walley, of Hardenhuish school in Wiltshire, said social dysfunction had potentially disastrous effects on pupils' education achievement.
He said: 'Those who underachieve in their education are much more likely to go on and live dysfunctional lives and be unable to support a stable family life for their own children.
'As a society we are in danger of creating an expanding, perpetuating and toxic circle. If we are not careful we could reach that crossover point where no matter how hard schools and teachers try, they will not be able to overcome the negative impact of broken and dysfunctional families.'"

Yvonne Bishop-Weston Nutritionist, London says "Stress can have many profound effects on optimal health and potentially lead to long term damage if not treated. It is a particularly viscious circle to get trapped in but there's many things you can do nutritionally to help the body deal with it"

Eat More - Lose Weight

Eating breakfast helps teens lose weight, says US study - Health News, Health &Wellbeing - Independent.co.uk

Another study backs up the ethos that you should breakfast like a king as it is the most important meal of the day.

Nutrition expert Yvonne Bishop-Weston from Foods for Life Nutritionists London said today " It's good to see more research that vindicates our successfull weight management methods. Often you have to eat more not less to lose weight, up to five times a day. Breakfast really is the most crucial meal of the day to ensure you are relying on fuel rather than hormones to kickstart your day and balance your metabolism"

The study showed that those who tuck in to a healthy breakfast – and therefore end up with a higher calorie intake – still tend to have a lower body mass index than those who skip the first meal of the day.

The research was conducted at the University of Minnesota and published in the Paediatrics journal.

Dr Mark Pereira, who led the research, admitted the study could paint a confusing picture for those who believe that the less you eat the less you weigh.

"It may seem counterintuitive," he said. "But while they ate more calories, they did more to burn those off, and that may be because those who ate breakfast did not feel so lethargic."

Dr Peraira added that even cooked breakfasts were better than missing out on food altogether. "While it's best to go for a healthy option – a wholegrain cereal for instance – the evidence does seem to suggest that eating anything is better than eating nothing."

The research is one of a number of recent studies that give credence to the theory that breakfast is not only a crucial component of a healthy diet but also encourages the body to stay toned.

A recent French study found that men and women who ate breakfast at least 10 out of 12 days tended to have lower waist to hip ratios than those that who did not. And a study of nearly 7,000 middle-aged adults in Norfolk revealed that those who ate the most in the morning put the least amount of weight on overall.

Anna Denny, a nutritional scientist at the British Nutrition Foundation, said: "There have been quite a few studies now that show eating breakfast is a crucial part of keeping a healthy weight. The key concept is those who eat breakfast tend to be less likely to snack on high-fat foods before the lunch period and therefore have a much healthier diet."

Dr Pereira said: "This study clearly supports what other studies have shown: kids who skip breakfast tend to gain more weight, and therefore would be at a higher risk for obesity."

Deaths from Superbugs up by 72%

not a super bug c dificile Deaths linked to hospital superbug are up by 72% | Society | The Guardian

Technically not classed as a super-bug bacteria C Dificile that causes chronic sickness and diarrhoea is reaching epidemic proportions and spreading like a virus in modern Britain.

Deaths from the superbug are up by 72% in NHS hospitals claim the latest report. Many other cases may go unreported in healthier people.

What can you do to protect yourself apart from keeping everything clean and avoiding spreading contamination. A Harley Street nutritionist provides some tips.

"There's a fundamental need to protect your immune system by strengthening your digestive system" says London nutritionist Yvonne Bishop-Weston. "Make sure you don't get dehydrated, always drink enough water, have soluble rather than insoluble fibre (oats rather than wheat bran) at least 5 portions of vegetables and no more than 3 portions of fruit per day, for fibre and antioxidants that protect the immune system. A residential strain probiotic to support beneficial bacteria is very useful. There are also specific beneficial micro-organisms which directly supports the immune system in the gut and compete with the harmful bacteria that has been used in the EU for years and is under trial in UK hospitals but is now available from Foods for Life Optimum Nutritionists."

Britney Spears Pregnant

Britney Spears Pregnant With all the important issues we are trying to address it is frustrating when all the world apparently wants to know is - "is Britney Spears Pregnant again?"

Even more frustrating with all the heart breaking stories we come across each week of couples who have been struggling with infertility trying for babies for years without success.

It's hard to blame people for feeling a slight edge of resentment at someone so apparently selfishly self obsessed smoking, drinking, drug taking and breaking all the rules and still seemingly able to churn out babies at the drop of a piece of denim.

However no one can deny that Britney has paid a price for her indiscretions and there is hope for those who find fertility a little harder than ms Spears.

Nutrition therapy can be up to 4 times more success full than IVF or other intervention treatments at less than a quarter of the cost so well worth a try.

UK Top 10 fruit and Veg

BRITS SAY CHIPS BUT NO PEAS PLEASE, SURVEY REVEALS : A survey by the Health Food Manufacturers Association has revealed only 14% of UK adults eat the recommended 5 fruit and vegetables per day and most people (66%) mistakenly believe potatoes can count as one portion towards the daily count of five fruit and veg per day.

Vitamin D2 just as good as D3 - better than Vitamin C?

Vitamin D2 just as good as D3?

The race is on to prove that Vitamin D is even more important than Vitamin C and that the Recommended Daily Amount is increased by over 100%

Researchers from Boston University have reported that both vitamin D2 and vitamin D3 forms are equally effective at maintaining 25-hydroxyvitamin D status.

"Our observations suggest that 1,000 International Units (IU) of vitamin D2 or vitamin D3 is required to sustain blood levels of 25(OH)D above a mean of 20 ng/ml, but was insufficient in raising the levels above a mean of 30 ng/ml."

Currently, the vitamin's RDA is 400 IU, but calls have been growing louder to increase this level considerably. The new study appears to support this view.

"One thousand IU of vitamin D2 daily was as effective as 1,000 IU of vitamin D3 in maintaining serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels and did not negatively influence serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels," said Holick. "Therefore, vitamin D2 is equally as effective as vitamin D3 in maintaining 25-hydroxyvitamin D status."

Livestock’s long shadow - Environmental UN Report

Livestock’s long shadow - Environmental issues and options

United Nations report on Livestock's effect on the environment Paul McCartney appeared on News at Ten highlighting the grave repercussions for us if we continue to eat as much meat as we currently do.

As if you needed anymore reasons to avoid saturated animal fats in your diet he added scarcity of water, land degradation, and polution to the list.

Sir Paul McCartney has a point. When meat eaters start admitting that Donald Watson was right, back in 1944 when he predicted catastrophe if we failed to change our diets, you know times are changing. The United Nations report is clear about apportioning blame. Cattle farming is worse than cars and planes. We must drastically change the way we eat or face responsibility for a horrifying legacy for our children.

Dr Ben Goldacre : Quackiest of Quacks

Cultural Dwarfs
Quackiest of Quacky Quackpot Bad Scientists Awards

bad scientist Ben Goldacre I think I may be one of the few people around in the Natural Health Industry who thinks that the vitriolic, potentially libellous, cynical and vindictive ramblings of Dr Ben Goldacre have been partly a good thing. He has probably done more than anyone to unite the Complementary Medicine Industry and help a vast new audience examine health alternatives more closely. Even just by highlighting the fact that there ARE alternatives to the grossly ineffectual NHS system.

Thousands more desperate people failed by the NHS having suffered from 13 years of 'IBS' (irritable bowel syndrome) , or even more years from constipation have suddenly found there was no need to be suffering and suddenly find themselves with relief after a few weeks.

Of course with any insufficiently regulated industry there are a few 'Earnest experimenters' who could do more harm than good, so encouraging people to be choosy in their choice of therapist can only be a good thing.

However Dr Ben Goldacre whilst he has encouraged the industry to be tighter, sharper and more professional has wasted a tremendous amount of practitioners and researchers time dealing with claims that are just pure fantasy and hypocritical political spin on his part.

He defends a system that fails to help people even with the basics, such as learning how to pooh properly, spends a ridiculous amount of money on laxatives and encourages Burger King into Hospitals.

Even the very worst therapists have grasped that drinking more water and eating more fruit and vegetables can cure most cases of constipation.

So many people could have been getting on with what they do best , healing people and educating the public - instead of that they've been fighting fires lit by the political pyromaniac Dr Ben Goldacre.

Good to see that finally someone has taken on Dr Ben Goldacre at his own game

Dr Ben Goldacre - Exposed

Cultural Dwarfs and Junk Journalism is Martin Walker's fourth book charting the development of the corporate science lobby that has grown rapidly since New Labour came to power in 1997. One of the most recent exponents of the Lobby is Dr Ben Goldacre who has regurgitated a bad 'Science' column in the Guardian newspaper since 2003.

Like other quackbusters Goldacre claims to write factually based and scientifically accurate articles about health, medicine and science either supporting scientists and doctors or criticising individuals involved in alternative or nutritional health care. Goldacre's writing, however, actually reflects the ideology of powerful industrial, technological and political vested interests.

Goldacre who it is claimed is a Junior doctor working in a London NHS hospital is actually a clinical researcher working at the centre of New Labour's Orwellian spin operation that puts a sympathetic gloss on anything shown to create adverse reactions from MMR to Wi-Fi, while at the same time undermining cost-effective and long tried alternative therapies such as acupuncture and homoeopathy. Goldacre is involved with public health researchers well known for trying to prove that those who claim to be adversely affected by pollutants in our modern high-technology society, suffer from 'false illness beliefs'.

It's about time Dr Ben Goldacre had a good ample dose of his own 'Quackpot' medicine - Martin Walker may be just the person to administer it.

Quackiest of Quacks
